Recall that on Wednesday, Sanusi expressed his decision to refrain from offering economic advice to the Tinubu administration, citing their failure to behave like friends.

He stated, “I have decided not to speak about the economy or the reforms, nor to explain anything regarding them. If I explained, it would only benefit this government, and I don’t want to aid this government.”

Sanusi further emphasized, “They’re my friends. If they don’t behave like friends, I don’t behave like a friend.”

The Emir also criticized the government’s lack of credible representatives to explain their actions, saying, “So, I watch them being stewed, and they don’t even have people with credibility who can come and explain what they’re doing. But I’m not going to help.”

In response, Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation, expressed disappointment that Sanusi now subtly condemns reforms he once recognized as essential— adding that its because of his shift in loyalty

Idris noted that Sanusi’s background in economics imposes a unique responsibility to contribute constructively rather than undermine reforms, stating, “His Highness…has a unique responsibility to contribute constructively rather than undermine reforms aimed at collective progress because he feels estranged from his ‘friends’ in government.”

The federal government urged Sanusi to rise above personal interests and partisan undertones, describing his position as “amusing” given his expected leadership qualities of “forthrightness, fairness, and justice.”

Idris emphasized the significance of current economic measures, stating Nigeria is at a critical juncture requiring bold actions to address entrenched economic challenges.

He argued that the reforms are essential and unavoidable, citing the temporary pains as a necessary consequence of decades of irresponsible economic management.

Idris highlighted the progress achieved through the reforms, including increased investor confidence, improved foreign reserves, and a stronger economy. He also noted the removal of the fuel subsidy has freed up resources for critical sectors like infrastructure, education, and healthcare.

The minister concluded by emphasizing the need for unity, focus, and sacrifice from all stakeholders to rebuild Nigeria. He urged leaders to promote collaboration and avoid undermining public trust.

The federal government called on Nigerians and leaders to work together for the nation’s progress, stating, “Let history record this moment as a turning point—when leaders and citizens alike choose to prioritize the nation’s destiny over personal gain.
