A huge crowd of residents besieged the Assembly on Thursday to complain about some “unscrupulous elements” and suspected land grabbers who they said only wanted to use the government agency to steal their land from them and resell to higher bidders.

They claimed that the development in the area, as a result of the newly constructed Agric-Owutu road, is the major factor push behind the sinister move of the land grabbers.

Addressing the residents during a peaceful protest at the State House of Assembly, the Speaker stressed the Assembly’s commitment to justice and its opposition to any form of oppression against the people.

Meranda, represented by Solomon Bonu of Badagry Constituency 1, alongside Aro Moshood (Ikorodu Constituency 2) and Luqman Orelope (Alimosho Constituency 1) assured the protesters that all stakeholders involved in the matter would be summoned for deliberation in a bid to reach an amicable resolution.

The protesting residents revealed that the 7-day demolition notice issued by the Lagos State Building Control Agency is set to expire on Friday, the 31st of January, 2025. They wondered why a genuine government agency in a Center of Excellence will give a week demolition notice to buildings that were neither distressed nor newly constructed, the more reason they were suspecting foul play.

They expressed grave concerns over the impending demolition of the houses they have inhabited for over 40 years, prompting them to seek intervention from the Assembly, the people’s representatives

How can any credible agent of government give 7-day demolition notice without previous warnings. These are mostly bungalows that were built over 40 years ago. They did not contravene any laws. These people have threatened to ensure they remove us from our land which we bought from their fathers with our sweat. They will not succeed “, he prayed

Similarly, after a close examination of the demolition notice, a senior staff of LASBCA, who also did not want to be quoted because he was not authorised to speak on behalf of the agency, expressed doubt about the authenticity of the demolition notice, which he noted could not have emanated from the General Manager of the building agency, who he claimed will never involved himself in any shady deal.
