That was the heart-wrenching tale of abuse and neglect recounted by 14-year-old Favour Nwankwo, a Basic Six student of Destined Success Academy in Oko, Anambra State, from a hospital bed where she is still undergoing treatment.
The incident, as gathered, happened in her residence on Wednesday, January 15, 2025.
Despite the excruciating pain that threatened to consume her, she still mustered the courage to attend school that day.
A vigilant class teacher, who noticed Favour writhing in excruciating pain, quickly alerted the school’s headmistress.
A distressing video that went viral, showed the severity of the burns the pupil sustained on six sensitive areas of her body, including her back, arms, lap, and buttocks. Blood dripped from the wounds, staining her underwear.
One of the teachers in the school condemned the parents’ actions, describing them as “inhumane” and “wicked.” She said, “It’s unbearable to think that parents could inflict such pain on their own child. Her stepmother came to the school and requested to take her to the hospital for treatment. But we prevented her from taking Favour away because we suspected they might try to cover up the incident.” We have reported the incident to the Ministry of Education and relevant civil society organisations.”
