Speaking on Thursday while receiving the Christian community in Bauchi State, Mohammed called on President Bola Tinubu to reconsider the tax policy reforms, warning that they could lead to anarchy. He argued that the reforms do not benefit the northern region and could hinder governors’ ability to pay salaries.

“To the tax reforms—it is not a good policy for northern Nigeria because we are not going to get money to pay you salaries,” he said. “They must listen, otherwise, they are calling for anarchy, and that is not good. We voted for the president in the state and other states.”

Mohammed, who also serves as the chairman of the PDP Governors Forum, emphasized the need for equity in policymaking. “They must not come up with a policy that favors only one state in the country. It is not about religion. It is not about tribe. It is about national unity,” he added.

He further warned that if the situation persists, the governors might take stronger actions. “We are going to fight for it,” he declared.

In a contrasting position, President Tinubu recently defended the reforms during his maiden media chat, insisting they were designed to be pro-poor and aimed at widening the tax net.

“The tax reform is here to stay. The reform is pro-poor and it is to widen the tax net, so we can have more people paying. The hallmark of a good leader is the ability to do what you have to do at the time it ought to be done,” Tinubu stated.

Despite growing opposition from northern governors and lawmakers, Tinubu expressed openness to dialogue. “Tax matters are subjects of debates and negotiations. I don’t mind cutting edges. I will,” he said.
