The tragedies, which occurred at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Abuja and a community centre in Okija, claimed numerous lives and left many others injured. President Tinubu, who was set to watch the boat parade from his Ikoyi residence, withdrew from the event following briefings on the incidents.

Dignitaries, including Lagos State officials and White Cap Chiefs, were already in attendance when the cancellation was announced. The President expressed his condolences to the victims’ families, urging local and state authorities to enforce stricter crowd control measures to prevent similar occurrences.

“These incidents, reminiscent of the recent stampede in Ibadan, highlight operational lapses that must not be tolerated by authorities or event planners,” President Tinubu said in a statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga.

The President called on event organisers to adhere to strict safety protocols, stressing that such tragedies are avoidable with proper planning. He prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased and wished the injured a swift recovery.

In closing, President Tinubu commended the Lagos State Government and organisers of the Boat Regatta for their efforts, wishing them a successful and incident-free festival.
