Sowore, who ran for president in the 2023 general elections under the African Action Congress (AAC), accused Ahmad of parroting the views of his influential backers who treat Nigeria as their personal domain and believe they alone can dictate the country’s future. Ahmad had recently declared that anyone supporting Kanu’s release should be considered a “sworn enemy of the nation.”

Kanu, who has been in detention since his re-arrest in June 2021 on charges related to terrorism, has sparked ongoing debate. Some groups have called for his unconditional release as a step toward healing the southeastern region.

In response, Sowore stated that Ahmad’s remarks reflect the attitudes of those who supported Buhari’s government, which he claims has actively hindered Kanu’s quest for justice. Sowore further emphasized that Kanu’s continued detention is a result of these powerful figures who treat the country as their private property.

He added, “Bashir Ahmad didn’t make this statement in isolation.
