Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has strongly condemned the military-style parade that involved Seyi Tinubu, the son of President Bola Tinubu. In a statement released on Sunday through his Media Aide, Paul Ibe, Atiku demanded a thorough investigation into the incident, which he described as a blatant violation of military tradition.

Atiku expressed his outrage, calling it an aberration for any branch of the Armed Forces to organize a formal parade for a non-designated public figure. He questioned the legitimacy of the event, highlighting that the so-called “Nigeria Cadet Network” group responsible for the parade is not recognized by the Nigerian Armed Forces.

The former Vice President further criticized the use of the term “Cadet,” traditionally associated with formally trained military personnel, by civilians in a manner that undermines the respected traditions of the military. Atiku stressed that the integrity of the Nigerian Armed Forces must be protected, and if legal violations occurred during the parade, the responsible parties must be held accountable.

In his statement, Atiku referenced a video circulating online that showed a group of young men, armed and in full military procession, bestowing unwarranted military honours upon President Tinubu’s son. He expressed concern over the disturbing nature of the event, stating, “It is with utter dismay and concern that Nigerians were subjected to a nauseating video…where a group of young men, armed and in full military procession, bestowed upon the President’s son unwarranted military honours.”

Atiku revealed that his legal team and military experts had investigated the “Nigeria Cadet Network” and discovered that it is not a legally registered entity. He also expressed alarm over the use of firearms by civilians during the parade, noting the rising concern of illegal arms proliferation in Nigeria.

The PDP presidential candidate has called for an urgent investigation by relevant security agencies into the following issues:

  1. The legitimacy of the “Nigeria Cadet Network” and its use of the title “Cadet,” despite not being a registered entity.
  2. The origin and legality of the firearms displayed by members of the “Nigeria Cadet Network.”
  3. The propriety of the military honours granted to the President’s son by non-commissioned civilians, with the protection of security personnel.
