Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, stated that the deployment was to prevent further incidents, noting that the stampede occurred due to a large, uncontrolled crowd overrunning the venue before the event began.
The Obijackson Foundation, deeply saddened by the tragedy, announced plans for a thorough investigation to determine the cause and implement measures to prevent future occurrences. In a statement, the Foundation pledged continued commitment to philanthropy, expressing sorrow for the families affected and vowing to enhance safety measures at future events.
The statement read:
“Our Annual Rice Sharing event, designed to bring joy and relief to the less privileged, turned tragic, claiming lives and leaving families in grief. This sorrowful incident strengthens our resolve to serve the vulnerable better and ensure such tragedies are never repeated.”
Governor Chukwuma Soludo also extended condolences, expressing grief for the loss of lives, particularly among women, children, the elderly, and pregnant or nursing mothers. In a statement by his press secretary, Mr. Christian Aburime, the governor acknowledged the Foundation’s noble intentions but emphasized the need for safer distribution practices.
The Anambra State government has launched an investigation into the stampede, pledging to identify lapses and address safety concerns. Soludo called on charities to adopt structured, decentralized distribution methods and prioritize vulnerable groups.
