Chijioke, who rose to prominence as one of the successful chairmanship candidates of the Action Peoples Party (APP) in last year’s local government elections, took the action after receiving reports about the station’s location in a densely populated residential area.
An ally of Rivers State governor Siminalayi Fubara, Chijioke said the exercise was not a witch hunt. Instead, he said the overall aim is to protect the lives and property of the people of Obio/Akpor local government.
He said, “I am not doing this because I have a personal quarrel with anyone; all I’m interested in is the safety of our people. Imagine an explosion happening here, given the proximity of the gas station to residential houses.”
The Executive Chairman gave the owner of the facility a 24-hour notice to dismantle the machine. Failure to comply, he said will result in the council removing the machine.
“It is unreasonable for anyone to site this kind of business in a residential area like this; we have sealed off the place while I will instruct the chief security officer of the council to impound the machine. I don’t want to endanger the lives of our people, not for any reason.” Amb. Ihunwo added.
