Although the cause of the spill is not yet ascertained, eyewitnesses who are members of One Million Youth Volunteers Network of Human Rights Defenders and Promoters in the Niger Delta, say the spilled crude oil filled underground pits before flowing freely into Shell’s pipeline right-of-way, affecting previously polluted areas being cleaned by the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project, HYPREP.

The Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre, YEAC-Nigeria, who confirmed the spill, suspected that the spill may have been caused by equipment failure during maintenance work on the manifold.

Executive Director of YEAC-Nigeria, Dr. Fyneface Dumnamene Fyneface, said trucks were seen evacuating the spilled crude from the manifold.

Fyneface urged the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency, NOSDRA, to conduct a joint investigation visit to assess the impact of the spill and determine the extent of environmental damage.

“We are calling on NOSDRA to carry out a joint investigation visit on the spill site, invoke sections of the Petroleum Industry Act, PIA 2021, and ensure that containment and cleanup are done with adequate compensation paid to those whose economic crops are impacted by the spill,” Dr. Fyneface stated.

He emphasized that swift intervention is needed to address the situation. “This spill has serious environmental and economic consequences for the affected community. The relevant authorities must act immediately to contain the damage and hold those responsible accountable,” he added.
