For the Igbo man or woman, it has always been a life of industry, hardwork, integrity, honesty.
Honestly, if Ndigbo do not checkmate the excesses of these con artists, these criminals masquerading as ‘celebrity native doctors’, and ‘celebrity Ndi ezenwanyi’, then, the future of our tomorrow people is doomed.
Visit the rivers in Igboland, especially rivers in Anambra State and to some extent Imo State, (Njaba River, Awo-Omamma and Okwudor is a case study), in the night and you will see a lot of unbelievable things going on, all in the name and guise of going back to our culture. Read ‘Things Fall Apart’, when Unoka, Okonkwo’s lazy father visited the Priestess of Agbala to find out why his own yams were not growing as big as the yams of others, the Priestess told him point blank to go into the forest like others to farm, and not planting year in, year out around his back yard, that is over used.
The Priestess never talked about the gods and ‘ego mbute’. For one to take a title in Igboland, you must showcase your handwork, your strength, your craftsmanship! And it must be visible! This ‘Ego Mbute’ or ‘Ogwu Ego’ is not part of our life, not part of our culture.
And, as such must be stamped out now, before it gets too late. Our youths are derailing, being misled by these criminals, these so called ‘celebrity native doctors’ and ‘ndi Ezenwanyi’. I visited Obosi a few months ago, and almost all the families have makeshift shops in their frontages, where fetish materials are displayed for sale.
The situation is serious and disturbing. Where are the elders!? Where are the traditional rulers!? Where is Ohaneze Ndigbo!? Is this how we are going to stand akimbo and watch our children eat vulture in place of fowl!?
