The Hoops captain is one of Celtic’s most decorated players of all time with 22 trophies to his name. McGregor was part of the second nine-in-row squad, a Celtic Invincible under Brendan Rodgers and one very piece of silverware in the Quadruple Treble run.
Let’s also not forget that in 40 games against Rangers, McGregor has won 23, drawn six and lost just 11 which includes the 5-1 hammering of the Glasgow rivals inside Ibrox back in 2017.
The 31-year-old also captained Celtic to their record-breaking eighth domestic treble and, tonight, McGregor is set to hit another incredible milestone whilst wearing the green and white Hoops.
Callum McGregor ‘really proud’ as he reaches European record vs Dinamo Zagreb
Celtic’s Champions League fixture against Dinamo Zagreb will be McGregor’s 100th European tie for the club.
Speaking ahead of the important Champions League fixture, McGregor was asked about the record as the Celtic captain admits the milestone has just crept up on him.
McGregor told Celtic TV, “Yeah, really proud. Obviously, these milestones just roll around when you least expect them, and it’s just a combination of putting one foot in front of the other and taking it game by game, and then someone touches you on the shoulder and says you’ve achieved this.
“So it’s a nice feeling. But as always, you’re just hungry for more, and you just want to keep playing and keep trying to do as best as you can for the club.”
Callum McGregor’s reaction to James Forrest beating his Celtic record
There is only two players ahead of the Celtic captain in terms of European appearances and when asked who he thought those players were, the legendary midfielder knew straight away who the culprits were.
“I think it’s my two mates [James Forrest and Scott Brown] isn’t it,” continued McGregor, “I’m never going to catch him [Forrest]. He’s like Peter Pan isn’t he?
“He’s still looking ahead. They two were unbelievable. A club legend so you’re in good company there.
“But I’m sure, as James has probably said as well, you’re just looking to get as many as he can and I’ll be the same as long as we can continue to play and help the team.
“Of course, that is the aim when you pull on the jersey you want to do it as many times as you can. But I don’t think anybody would have envisaged it going this well and being in the position I am today.
“So I’m hugely lucky and hugely fortunate to have played so many games for the club and be part of it. So yeah, I think myself really lucky.”
Hopefully McGregor can mark the occasion for Celtic with a win against Zagreb and three important Champions League points.
If the Hoops can manage a win in Croatia then they will qualify from the league phase of UEFA‘s flagship tournament with two games to spare.
With the League Cup final against Rangers coming up on Sunday, McGregor will want to head into that match with an elusive away win in the Champions League. A feat unmatched since the 3-0 victory over Anderlecht in 2017. ...CLICK HERE TO READ THE FULL ARTICLE➤
