At the sixth edition of the Muhammad Rosulullah International Conference held at the Centre in Surulere area of Lagos with the theme; ‘Tax Reform in the Life of Prophet Muhammad’ speakers throw their weight behind the reform calling on Nigerians to study the reform and have a good understanding of it for the good of the nation in general.

Sheikh Ahmad Al-Bukhari Al-Mukhtar, founder of Muhammad Rosulullah Global family, in his welcome address said that the conference is a gathering of Muslims annually to discuss important topics around contemporary issues in the world, about the way of life in accordance with the Noble Prophet’s lifestyle.

He said that the tax reform has been chosen to ensure that Nigerian Muslims get the right information about the reform to make informed decisions.

Imam Shefiu Majemu, Founder, the Islamic Platform Society of Nigeria while giving an overview of the conference said that there have been some rejections from some quarters while some do not even understand anything about the bill.

He said that the organisers chose the topic to create more awareness and to make people understand what the government is trying to do.

He charged the government to build back the trust in the minds of Nigerians to ensure that loopholes are blocked and the revenue collected do not end up in the pockets of some individuals, adding that the conference is to provide a solution to help the government properly situate its tax reform bill.

Professor Saheed Timehin, a Senior Lecturer at the Lagos State University (LASU) in his presentation titled; ‘Tax Reform System in the life of the Prophet’ said that taxation is not about if you want to pay or not, that one thing that is common is that a lot of people who complained that the government is not producing basic amenities are not even paying their tax or are not performing their civic duties.

Timehin, who was represented at the conference by Dr. Ganiyu Bamgbose noted that if Nigeria finds its way to integrate the Islamic system of taxation into the Nigeria socio-political entity, Nigeria can be sure of a balanced and developed economy.

“So, in a system where you are not fulfilling your roles as citizenry, you cannot completely castigate the government for not fulfilling their roles.

Hajia Rizkiyahh Adam-Adedimeji, the Managing Director\ CEO Rinna Global Energy Limited in her presentation titled; ‘Understanding the Proposed Tax Reform Regime- Prospects and Challenges’ said that people are not afraid of paying tax, but are more concern with what the revenue is used for.

She said that if the people are sure of what the government will use the money for and if the revenue is being distributed judiciously and utilized for the purpose of which it is being sourced, that people will be happy to pay.

She called on the government to do more public engagement and create more awareness to educate the citizens on the benefits and necessity of the reforms.

She also said that there is a need to ensure transparent fairness and efficiency of the tax collected and that the government should leverage technology.
