According to a statement from the returning officer, Dr. Achi Achi, the Ikwerre-born Okwukwu was elected unopposed at the event, which began on Thursday and is set to conclude on Friday.Achi described the new leader as a progressive figure selected to unite and represent the Igbo community.

During his acceptance speech, Okwukwu expressed gratitude to the delegates, stating: “I humbly accept the enormous responsibility imposed on me to lead the Igbo race at this moment in our history.”

He outlined his primary goals, including advocating for the unconditional release of Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu, promoting the restructuring of Nigeria, and uniting the Igbo community. “I shall live up to their high expectations,” Okwukwu pledged, committing to address the issues facing the Igbo nation.

Okwukwu also vowed to work closely with governments, business leaders, and other stakeholders to tackle challenges within the region. He emphasized plans to push for the modernization of Igbo language and infrastructure, such as the dredging of coastal ports and creating a foundation for industrial development in the region.

Furthermore, he promised to advocate for the creation of Anioma State and other new states to balance the interests of the Igbo people.

Okwukwu pledged to work hand in hand with ethnic groups nationwide to drive restructuring and ensure the integration of Igbo communities across the country into the Ohanaeze framework.

The convention, held in Port Harcourt, brought together delegates from the South-East, Diaspora, and over 200 cultural and social groups.
