Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov later clarified that the US had not yet formally requested the meeting. Trump has pledged to work towards ending the war in Ukraine shortly after taking office on January 20. He has raised doubts about US military and financial support for Kyiv. “President Putin wants to meet… we have to get that war over with. That’s a bloody mess,” he stated.
As part of his approach, Trump has nominated Keith Kellogg, a former national security adviser and retired lieutenant-general, as his special envoy to Ukraine and Russia.
Kellogg outlined his vision for peace in a policy paper published by the America First Policy Institute, where he suggested that Ukraine should only receive further US aid if it engages in peace talks with Moscow.
However, he also emphasized that continued aid would be necessary if Russia refuses to negotiate.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed optimism that under Trump’s leadership, the war could end sooner, following a constructive phone call between the two.
