The reforms have generated widespread discussions, especially in Northern Nigeria, where fears of marginalization persist.
While supporting the modernization of the tax system, the Senator criticized the implementation strategy and suggested that introducing the reforms in phases would be more practical than enforcing them all at once.
He noted that the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) might lack the capacity to manage the increased tax volume currently handled by multiple agencies such as the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).
Adamu urged the government to approach the reforms with caution and fairness to prevent divisions across the country and underlined the need for unity and warned against policies that could foster suspicion or alienation among different regions.
In response to the controversies, the Senate established a 10-man Elders Committee to engage with the Presidency, the committee’s goal is to address contentious issues surrounding the reforms and propose solutions that connect with national interests.
Adamu, as a member of the committee, stressed the importance of a thorough and technical approach to the discussions, avoiding emotional responses that could derail progress.
The Senator also underlined the need for policies that promote inclusivity and unity across the nation and called on leaders to prioritize national cohesion and ensure that reforms benefit all citizens equally, irrespective of their region or background.
“The committee that I am part of will go into the nitty gritty of these issues and they are not emotional and I believe and hope that we should not use whatever we are doing to bring disunity to this nation. Don’t use this tax bill to divide this country. Don’t allow those kinds of suspicions to come to a point where this country will be divided. Because the issue is not only about taxation, there are so many issues up there so if you use this thing to demonise a certain section of the country because you think they are not following your agenda then it is wrong,” he said. ...CLICK HERE TO READ THE FULL ARTICLE➤
