Prominent human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Mr. Femi Falana, has written a formal petition to the Inspector-General of Police, urging an investigation into alleged threats made by High Chief Mike Oshaloni, the Oloti of Ado Ekiti and head of the Afe Babalola family, against lawyers in Ado Ekiti....CLICK HERE TO READ THE FULL ARTICLE➤
In the letter dated December 18, 2024, Falana highlighted the backdrop of the threats, linking them to his advocacy for the decriminalization of free speech in Africa and his call for the release of Mr. Dele Farotimi. Farotimi had been allegedly arraigned over statements made in his book,“Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System”.
Falana explained that Chief Oshaloni had circulated a video threatening to unleash violence on lawyers and protesters in Ado Ekiti, specifically mentioning Falana and unnamed legal practitioners. According to Falana, Chief Oshaloni’s remarks included ominous warnings such as:“Whatever you say, you must expect consequences for it. So, either he is doing it willingly or being sponsored, whoever is involved, they are going to regret this action.”
Falana clarified that he is not involved in the legal defense of Mr. Dele Farotimi nor in any planned protest against Aare Afe Babalola SAN in Ado Ekiti. However, he expressed concern that the threats could escalate into physical harm against him and other lawyers.
The letter emphasized that while Aare Afe Babalola SAN has every right to defend his name and reputation, such a defense must remain within legal boundaries, without resorting to threats or intimidation.
Falana called on the Inspector-General of Police to urgently investigate the matter, stressing the responsibility of the Nigeria Police Force to ensure the safety and protection of citizens, including legal practitioners. ...CLICK HERE TO READ THE FULL ARTICLE➤
